Which vignette category does your vehicle belong to?
OptimÚt (and the official e-vignette system itself) also asks for your vehicle category in the Vehicle type field — this trips a lot of people up, because the category NAMES aren't intuitive. Based on the official e-vignette system's own information page, this page clarifies what each category actually covers.
D1 — most passenger cars
This covers most ordinary cars: passenger vehicles with a maximum authorised weight of 3.5 tonnes, suitable for carrying up to 7 people including the driver — so everyday cars, estates and most SUVs.
D1M — motorcycles
Applies only to motorcycles, at a lower rate than D1.
D2 — whatever doesn't fit into D1 (this is NOT a "truck category")
The most commonly misunderstood category: the name suggests trucks, but D2 actually covers ANY passenger vehicle that doesn't meet D1's conditions — so 8-9 seater vehicles, some minibuses, motor caravans, AND trucks up to 3.5 tonnes.
U — trailers (only behind a D2 vehicle)
The U category is NOT buses — it's the separate vignette for a trailer towed by a D2-category vehicle, tied to its license plate. If you're towing a trailer with a D1-category car, you typically don't need a separate U-category vignette for it.
